Dexter: Slice of Life is a Facebook game set in the world of the hit Showtime series. Take on the role of Dexter, the serial killer with a conscience, as he hunts his favorite prey: other murderers that darken the streets of Miami. Through it all, you must help Dexter follow his Code: he must make absolutely certain that his victims are deserving of his attentions and, above all else, avoid getting caught.
As Dexter, you must investigate crime scenes to find clues that identify murderers and prove their guilt. Once you’ve identified a killer sufficiently to measure up to the Code, you can stalk them and inject them with tranquilizers. The killer wakes up trapped in a kill room, ready to confess his sins and become a blood slide trophy for Dexter… the rest of him packed up in trash bags and dumped in the ocean where no one will ever find the body. Dexter is a very neat monster.
In addition to playing through the game’s scripted stories, you may make your own killer, the “Dark Passenger,” and unleash him on other players. Playing Dexter themselves, they will attempt to solve your crimes and track you down for your own trip to the kill room. You can do the same thing to players that unleash their Dark Passengers on your own personal city of Miami.
Missions: During play, you receive a series of tasks outlining Dexter’s process of hunting down killers. Each includes steps you need to take to meet the Code and move on to the next stage of your investigation. Missions often have several steps, and you’ll generally want to tackle them in order: one step often rewards you with the tools you’ll need to accomplish the next.
Areas: Miami is divided into areas: neighborhoods and buildings of significance to Dexter’s investigations. You can access different neighborhoods by opening the city map and clicking the area you wish to visit. Most missions also give you a direct link to area in which it can be completed.
Gameplay: Each area has a number of objects and characters that you can click. Clicking them begins an action (and hovering your cursor over the target will tell you what that action is). You sometimes need special tools or other items before initiating an action. Completing an action grants rewards and often progresses the story, but consumes Mask, as Dexter can only keep his vigilante actions a secret for so long before he needs to go back to his day job and build up some normalcy in the eyes of his acquaintances.
Stealth: When Dexter finally satisfies himself that a target fits the Code, you progress to a special area and turn the hunter into the hunted. Once you enter the area, you begin intercepting the moving target. Click one of the highlighted obstacles that looks like it will screen Dexter from his prey, and he will move there and hide while the target looks for threats. If you picked a good hiding spot, Dexter is completely hidden and loses very little Stalk. If you picked an adequate one, you lose more Stalk as Dexter scrambles to remain hidden. If you were caught in the open, you lose a lot of Stalk as Dexter relies on only the shadows to hide him. Run out of Stalk, and you’ll have to try again.
Player vs. Player: You can engage in conflict with other players as Dexter by opening the Targets list and selecting an opponent. You visit the police station and follow several missions to track and stalk the target, much like a killer in the main story. Playing PvP as Dexter uses up Mask and Stalk normally.
Dexter’s Apartment: You can add objects and characters to the interior and exterior of Dexter’s apartment. These items generate resources for you over time, but may serve as targets to others. Add them by opening the store when you are in your neighborhood and purchasing the desired item from the list. Once you have clicked to purchase an item, it appears attached to your cursor, and when you click a valid location it will appear in that spot. After you have placed it, you can click the object to open a context menu that allows you to move it again or rotate it in place.
The Dark Passenger
In addition to playing Dexter, you can take on the role of a Dark Passenger to terrorize the neighborhoods of other players. Select your Dark Passenger by choosing the image at the bottom left. This will take you to the Dark Passenger’s neighborhood.
From here, you can open the Targets list and selecting an opponent. Your killer visits the neighborhood that player has made for Dexter, and commits crimes and murders there to steal that player’s resources and goading Dexter to come after you. The Dark Passenger uses up Insanity to commit these crimes, which can be upgraded and refilled much like Mask and Stalk.
You can customize your Dark Passenger’s neighborhood much like you can Dexter’s apartment. Objects and NPCs added will generate resources for you over time. You can add them by opening the store when you are in your neighborhood and purchasing the desired item from the list. Once you have clicked to purchase an item, it appears attached to your cursor, and when you click on a valid location it will appear in that spot. After you have placed it, you can click the object to open a context menu that allows you to move it again or rotate it in place.
