Star Trek Online

Release Date:

Star Trek Online, (often simply abbreviated as STO) , is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that was developed by Cryptic Studios. The game is the created by Gene Roddenberry. The game is now possessed by Perfect World and it will be free to play later 2011.

The game takes place in the 25th Century, 30 years after the events of Star Trek (2009) in the alternate timeline. The game world is completely instantiated, which means that one never meets a very large amount of players. Star Trek Online is the first MMORPG set in the Star Trek universe.

You start off simply enough, to craft your own custom character and figure as the captain of your starship. Anything from human to well-known races in the ST universe are available, as well as a great deal of bizarre and unique manipulations that you are capable of creating through the interface. Wardrobe options are fairly open, with certain restrictions to character class and there are tailors available through certain areas of the game to alter your appearance.

The ability to choose your own skills should be considered carefully, as your ability to captain your ship depends on you as well as your finely honed team. You can also choose new or older ships and more become available to you as you progress in the game, and you have the ability to name it.

The beginning missions allow you to get you familiar with your surroundings and with the maneuvering of the ship and your crew.

As the game unfolds, you are able to recruit more crew members who will be valuable to your game play. This is similar to Gameforge’s Browser MMO Star Trek: Infinite Space. You will encounter NPC’s who can sell weapons and some rare weapons may lock onto a certain player if equipped.

When you finish missions you will be awarded with skill points and bridge officer skill points, sometimes special items are awarded based on ship upgrades.

This is incredibly useful especially if you have a larger and more difficult mission ahead of you that requires the use of teamwork. The big missions will fail if you try to go alone and conquer them, leading you into frustration and losing many hours of play time.

During the beta testing, there weren’t as many options open to the players as they have added and that has made the game far more valuable in terms of expansion.

You have the option to pay for a monthly subscription or a lifetime subscription and you are also able to purchase cryptic points to acquire other items in-game.

Finally, when they give you strange items that you’ll be tempted to throw away if they seem useless, don’t. Tribbles are useful for certain things, as are the strange food items that some enemies may drop.

  2. Red says:

Perfect world has ruined the game. They have completely nerfed the science class, the cruisers can't tank, and the tacticals are way overpowered. Balance was thrown way off, and now Perfect World is giving all its members a base boost to their ships, while leaving Cryptic's old paid players out to dry.
