Stormfall: Age of War (Stormfall for short) is a Facebook-based city building game from Israel-based Plarium behind social game Pirates: Tides of Fortune. The game is set in the dark fantasy world where players build their empire by constructing buildings such as Tall Hall, Barn, Keep, and even Black market. Your castle must be utterly self-sufficient and you must build all the townhouses, Mines,and farms your castle can support.
The game features detailed artwork and graphics, fascinating storyline and socializing multiplayer battle, as well as offers dubbing in the dialogue and story narrative.
Stormfall: Age of War is as impressive as Pirates: Tides of Fortune in visual designs, but it is exactly a remake of “Pirates: Tides of Fortune” except for its storyline and building models.
In fact, It is hard for newbies to manage their castle partly because the game’s buildings are designed as if they look the same with a strong focus on the color of black and grey, easily causing problems to new comers. For example, if a player is just playing the game 1- 2 hours per day, he or she tend to forget how to find an appropriate building to proceed. Though the developer Plarium has labored greatly to make a profound and challenging game, the name of each building is far from being absolutely clear and beyond player’s grasp at least in the first few days. On the other hand, Stormfall has an extremely complex strategy system yet without a clear user-friendly navigation helping new comers to know before they quit.
You start with an empty plot where you build your castle with resource infrastructure, military facilities, fortifications and decorations. Each building has its unique look, but it is still hard to recognize which building is the one you want to check.
Most of the times, you will have to move your mouse cursor to look for the one as the task suggests. If there is an option showing all building’s name, that would be more convenient for newbies to spot what exactly the building is.
The game supports fullscreen. Players can zoom in or out to see more details of buildings in the fullscreen, this somewhat could help a bit to differentiate the buildings, but it is still not enough. The fullscreen mode reminds me of that of “Forge of Empire”, but Stormfall: Age of War looks better thanks to its clearly textured models of buildings and characters.
Battle plays a critical part in the game. To be exact, the ultimate goal of the game is to battle. So all of efforts you put at the initial stage may contribute to your future fighting. The battle system is as complex as you never imagined. At your protection period, you can only attack Orc Encampment, and defend refugee Encampment. As you reach higher level, you can raid, or Besiege other castles near or far from you across the map. Raiding a castle can help you loot resources while besieging a castle may not have an immediate effect as the raid is. But Besieging a castle could help you earn in-game premium currency Sapphires every week if you are strong enough to climb to the Top 10 Lords.
There is an option “Lost Arts” located at the right side bar of the screen. The lost Arts is identical to a research center where you can research technologies or arts to unlock or upgrade unit’s attack, defense or enhance your trading rate. It is strongly recommended that you keep upgrading the ancient arts like Composite Bow, Cloak of Shadows, Devine blades and etc. That not only helps strengthen your troops, but also earns you troops and Sapphires each time you gain a new levelup.
Most of social games feature an invitation system that helps to spread the game beween friends. In Stormfall: Age of War, social mechanics are not limited to the invitations between friends, but features a substantial “scoial” funcion that rewards players with resources and almost invulnerable unit “Wraith”. So Most of players would visit their friend’s cities in the hope of summoning more Wraiths and resources.
